with relief and gratitude (not selfishness) i say 'thank you'... i know where my kids are and that they are safe... my house is standing... i have water and food... i know where my friends and family are... i remember the panic in september 2001 when the reception had gone out in the city and we couldn't reach our loved ones... i cannot wrap my brain around this level of disaster...
and i say 'how do i help?' ...
'how wonderful it is that nobody need wait
a single moment before starting
to improve the world.'
~ anne frank
the moment is always 'now'...
please do not get swallowed up in the skepticism that can arise when thinking of donating... yes, there are scams... so stick with the names you know - doctors without borders, the red cross, hope for haiti, oxfam...
every little bit counts... we can all make a difference together...
there is another auction going on at nina bagley's blog 'ornamental'... that one ends at midnight tonight...
what a wonderful post! i too try not to read, hear or watch the news for personal and health reasons.
ReplyDeletei too can't imagine what those people are going through. it is so devastating and you're right, the moment is now. we who are so lucky can give a little of ourselves to help.
I think you speak for many of us Mary Jane...I rarely read the paper, watch the news or listen to the radio... Someone once told me "I have my head in the sand"...I know differently.
ReplyDeleteThe disaster in Haiti is tragic...when I heard about it from my son I did spend some time investigating the situation...my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones and the survivors!!! Their lives will be forever changed.
In this situation we all do what we can...
Cheers
i too dun read the newspaper often enough but there are enough images and chatter all over the place to make me realize that this is quite bad. i hope the people will find peace and healing soon, and that they can return to their lives and start rebuilding again ... but most importantly, have the chance to mourn for lost ones ...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful post...you always have the right words.
ReplyDeleteI second Judy...you do have a way of expressing what many of us are thinking. The tragedy is so horrible beyond words.
ReplyDeleteCindy
It's all so very massive and tragic...the enormity is befuddling and I feel so small, but I've done what I can and will continue to hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully touching post.
A beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteIf only we could stop wars and put all that energy into building safe housing and planting fields of grain.
